The Dragon & Tiger

The Tiger is symbolic of the physical world, while the Dragon signifies the mental and Spiritual world. Images of the Dragon & Tiger together at an even level represents harmony, like Yin/Yang.  If one is overpowering the other in an image, that would show one force being in abundance and an imbalance in that realm.

In the Martial Arts world, students begin as Tigers. They are at the beginning of their Martial Arts journey and have taken the first step with their dedication to practice. The Tiger's strength is physical strength. Eager to fight and to demonstrate skills. The Tiger represents aggression and action and fights with a straighforward attack (line).

The Dragon represents an enlightened Martial Artist continuing their lifelong journey in the Martial Arts. The Dragon is physically strong, however relies mostly on intellectual combat.  The strength of the Dragon comes from within.  The Dragon also represents reaction and fights with circular attacks.  The dragon is not eager to fight and demonstrate skills. Instead, he contains the knowledge within and only unleashes it when forced to as a last resort.  When it is unleashed, it takes his opponents by surprise and is without forewarning.

The goal for all Martial Artist is to strive to become like the Dragon. Keeping the aggression of the Tiger within while being confident of their own abilities and not feeling the need to show them.  The Dragon is humble and wise and knows his own strength while the Tiger does not. If one is not guided to become like the Dragon from their instructor, that is when an unbalance in the world takes place.
